The first one is a refraction of moonlight through ice crystals in the atmosphere. It was very cool to see. This image was taken with a 30 second exposure with our Nikon D60.  I found more info describing this phenomenon here.

I also took another one a couple weeks ago after the snow storm hit us pretty hard. I live in the Midwest, and we typically don’t see this kind of snow. This image was taken a few nights later when the snow had time to melt a little and then re-crystallize on the surface.
